Florida Foliage
Willow Oak Tree | Live Plants | Quercus Phellos | Beautiful Unique Fast Growing and Hardy Shade Tree
Easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade. Prefers moist well-drained loams, but adapts to a wide range of soil conditions including clays with somewhat poor drainage. Generally tolerant of urban pollution. Quercus phellos, commonly called willow oak, is a medium to large, deciduous oak tree of the red oak group that is noted for its oak shape, willow-like leaves and relatively fast growth rate. It is native to the Southeastern United States, typically being found in moist bottomland soils. Willow-like leaves emerge light to bright green in summer, transitioning to yellow and red in the fall. And unlike similar varieties, it stands up to tough conditions, so you get beauty and brawn from the Willow Oak. It stands up to poorly-drained soil, so it's perfect for those finicky spots in your yard prone to flooding. From swampy areas in the corner of your garden to front-yard focal points, the Willow Oak Tree grows above and beyond. Without the classic sharp lobes of the typical Red Oak, the Willow Oak has glossy, slender leaves that are similar to that of a Weeping Willow. The lateral limbs have a downward and outward swoop that adds credibility to the name "Willow" Oak. This is perhaps one of the best shade trees in a large lawn. With few surface roots, this is a low maintenance tree when used correctly. It features a simple fall clean up. Small leaves drop quickly and do not persist on the tree like other Oaks. This is a fast-growing Oak. You'll quickly enjoy the marvelous shade that blocks hot afternoon sun from southern or western exposures.
