In spring, the young stems are purple and mature foliage holds its glossy green color all year. Small black fruit that hangs on throughout the winter. This extremely hardy, evergreen shrub has small leaves with shiny green foliage. This densely compacted shrub has a globe-shaped growth habit that grows up to 6 feet tall. This multifaceted plant is ideally used as a foundation, hedge, grouping, and accent plant. This low-maintenance evergreen hedge needs a regular water schedule to ensure the growth of a mature root system. The first year of growth requires watering weekly. After the mature root system is established, watering is needed occasionally, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly. Water your Ilex Compacta Holly before planting. Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade. Dig hole 3X the width of pot. Backfill and plant just above soil level. Water and add more soil if needed. Mulch plants. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Water daily until established. Once mature, shearing is recommended to maintain desired shape.
